China rescues 89 trafficked children, arrests 369

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities have rescued 89 trafficked minors as young as 10 days and the oldest 4 years and arrested 369 suspects after uncovering two child trafficking gangs, authorities said Wednesday.
The busts highlighted China's thriving black market in children — mostly involving buyers who want more children or those who want them as slave labor — that endures despite harsh penalties for traffickers, including death.
It was not clear from the reports posted Wednesday on the Ministry of Public Security website if sex abuse also might have been a motive. Calls to the ministry went unanswered.
One case stretched across 14 provinces in China and the other involved a trafficking ring that mainly sold children in Vietnam through neighboring Guangxi province.
A report by the People's Daily, posted on the ministry's website, said raids were carried out on July 20 in 14 provinces in the south, east and north of the country.
The operation involved 2,600 officers and the People's Daily said the youngest child was 10 days old and the oldest 4 years.
A separate People's Daily report that wasn't published on the ministry's website said the Vietnam operation on July 15 resulted in the rescue of eight infants aged 10 days to 7 months. Thirty-nine people, of which at least four were Vietnamese, were detained.
A total of 89 minors were rescued and 369 suspects arrested in both operations, the reports said.
Police sent the rescued children to orphanages as their parents had not been found.
It is often difficult to trace the parents of trafficked children and the law has not clearly defined the circumstances in which a buyer of a child should be punished. While many babies are stolen, some are sold by their parents.
Liu Ancheng, deputy director of the Ministry of Public Security Criminal Investigation Bureau, was quoted in the People's Daily report as saying that if the buyers have not abused the children, they cannot be held criminally responsible.
Liu said the "dreadful practice of buying and selling children" is a result of ignorance of the law in rural areas as well as traditional Chinese social norms that call for people "to have both sons and daughters" and children who will look after a parent in old age.
China's traditional preference for male heirs means some families sell their female babies in order to try for a boy, since the country's one-child policy limits most urban couples to one child and rural families to two.

South African man wakes after 21 hours in morgue fridge

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African man awoke to find himself in a morgue fridge — nearly a day after his family thought he had died, a health official said Monday.

Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the man awoke Sunday afternoon, 21 hours after his family called in an undertaker who sent him to the morgue after an asthma attack.
Morgue owner Ayanda Maqolo said he sent his driver to collect the body shortly after the family reported the death. Maqolo said he thought the man was around 80 years old.
"When he got there, the driver examined the body, checked his pulse, looked for a heartbeat, but there was nothing," Maqolo told the Associated Press.

But a day after staff put the body into a locked refrigerated compartment, morgue workers heard someone shouting for help. They thought it was a ghost, the morgue owner said.
"I couldn't believe it!" Maqolo said. "I was also scared. But they are my employees and I had to show them I wasn't scared, so I called the police."
After police arrived, the group entered the morgue together.
"I was glad they had their firearms, in case something wanted to fight with us," Maqolo said.
He said the man was pale when they pulled him out.
"He asked, 'How did I get here?'" Maqolo said.
The health department said the man was then taken to a nearby hospital for observation and later discharged by doctors who deemed him stable.
Kupelo, the health department spokesman, urged South Africans to call on health officials to confirm that their relatives are really dead.
The man's family was informed that he was alive during a family meeting convened to make funeral arrangements. They're very happy to have him home, Maqolo said.
But Maqolo said he is still trying to recover from the traumatic experience."I couldn't sleep last night, I had nightmares," he said. "But today I'm much better."

Diet Soda Dangers

Before you grab your next soda think about what you are really putting into your body.

You are hot and thirsty. Before you grab your next soda think about what you are really putting into your body. Many women are not aware of the many health risks that they are taking by simply having a diet soda. They think they are making a smart choice in choosing a diet soda over a regular soda. There are many diet soda dangers to your health.
Diet Soda Weight Gain
To be honest most women start drinking diet soda because they are worried about gaining weight. They switch from drinking regular soda to drinking diet soda. Women usually feel like they are making a smart switch. Unfortunately, this may not indeed be the case. The truth is many women actually gain weight from switching to diet soda from regular soda. They think they are cutting calories by drinking diet soda so they indulge in higher calorie food when having meals.
Artificial Sweeteners
Many diet sodas have artificial sweeteners in them. This could be a health risk. The sweet tasting artificial sweeteners can actually lead you to crave sweeter things. This might make you indulge on things that are not healthy for your body. For example, it might make you want to eat candy. This adds credit to the gaining weight theory because after drinking a diet soda you may then want sweeter things to ingest causing you to eat more calories than you should have in your daily diet. Plus, some artificial sweeteners are not good for your health in general.
Caffeine
Many diet sodas have caffeine in them. Although some people love caffeine because it helps give them energy for their day, caffeine may not be healthy for you. Even though caffeine may give you a quick burst of energy it could also lead you to feel very fatigued throughout the rest of your day. You may also feel jumpy and feel anxious. Plus, caffeine helps to dehydrate you because caffeine helps to flush out your body fluids. Many women find that drinking diet soda with caffeine in it causes them to experience headaches. If you experience negative health issues, then you may want to cut out caffeine in your diet.
Metabolic Syndrome
Drinking diet soda may lead you to getting metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is when you have a bunch of risk factors for things like high cholesterol, insulin resistance, obesity, and high blood pressure. Drinking even just one soda a day can put you at higher health risk for getting metabolic syndrome. Having metabolic syndrome increases your chances of having heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. Having metabolic syndrome is a health issue that you really want to avoid at all costs. So make sure if you drink diet soda on a regular basis that you take all your health issues into consideration first before continuing to indulge in it. Is really worth it to drink diet soda if your health could suffer because of it?
Heart Smart
A big thing in the news lately is how some diet sodas may not be good for your heart. If you are trying to be heart smart healthy then put down your diet soda right now. Diet soda might raise your blood pressure. It could lead to you having heart disease and strokes. Drinking any soft drinks could be a risk factor to your heart health. So, if you are concerned about your heart health then you may consider cutting out not only diet soda, but any type of soda all together. Be careful what you decide to drink because there are many diet soda dangers to your health.

Your Health - Insanely Slim: Diet Pill Ingredients Can Cause Mood Swings

Take a pill, lose some weight and your mind in the process. Diet pills contain ingredients to boost mood and dieters have no idea.

About 30 minutes after taking an "all-natural" green tea diet pill, the anger started. The slightest noise sent me into a rage and I snapped at every question anyone dared ask my way. It took five hours for the effects of that "all-natural" diet pill to wear off. At the time, I did not link the diet pill to the mood swings, but after a few days of taking those little green pills, I realized these were no normal bouts of anger.
5HTP may cause an unsafe rise in serotonin levels. If you are currently taking medications for depression or anxiety, 5HTP is not a safe diet pill ingredient. 5HTP is proven to boost serotonin levels, which is the same effect anti-depressant medications have on the brain. Boosting serotonin too high can cause serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome presents with a variety of symptoms, including difficulty concentrating, hallucinations and rapid heart rate. Patients with bipolar disorder should not take 5HTP.
SAM-e may cause hypomania in bipolar patients.SAM-e is all natural and safe, because it naturally occurs in all things living, according to the SAM-e website. Despite being all-natural, SAM-e is proven to cause hypomania and mania in patients with bipolar disorder. Depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder are symptoms of bipolar disorder. Patients taking medications for any mood related diagnosis should avoid SAM-e.
Kava kava may relax you, but at what cost. Kava kava is a natural treatment for insomnia and anxiety. It tranquilizes the body without interfering with brain function or clarity of thoughts. Unfortunately, the supplement may cause liver damage. Prescription medications for depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder are metabolized by the liver, in some cases. Taking kava kava with prescription medications in these categories is like pounding the liver with a one-two punch. Kava kava, working in conjunction with an anti-anxiety medication may take mood down too far, causing depression or inability to stay awake.
Phenylethylamine may boost mood, but it also boosts mood swings. Who would have ever thought chocolate could negatively affect mood? Phenylethylamine is common found in chocolate. This chemical is the reason chocolate works as an aphrodisiac. Diet pill companies often include concentrated forms of phenylethylamine in diet pill formulas. Some diet pills will list warnings in the fine print on the official supplement website stating the potential negative side effects of phenylethylamine in patients with mood disorders. These warnings are not printed on most product labels.
What ingredients affected my mood? The diet pill I chose seemed safe, according to the label. The ingredients included acai fruit, Hoodia Gordonii extract, yerba mate leaf, guarana seed extract, uva ursi extract, capsicum fruit, polygonum cuspidatum, green coffee bean extract, fucoxanthin wakame seaweed. None of these ingredients is known to cause mood swings or anger, but the effect I felt stopped after I stopped taking the supplement. It just goes to show that even a seemingly harmless diet pill can cause negative mental side effects.

Your Style - How to Purchase a Custom Pair of Jeans

Are you tired of jeans that fit in the waist, but are too big for the hips? What about petite pants that are still too long? If only you could have your jeans custom made.

Are you tired of jeans that fit in the waist, but are too big for the hips? What about petite pants that are still too long? If only you could have your jeans custom made. Guess what. You can have jeans custom made. If you're willing to pay more for your jeans, you can customize everything from measurements to design. While several companies offer this service, this article will focus on the company MakeYourOwnJeans.com, which has been featured in Woman's World magazine and even The Wall Street Journal.
Take Your Measurements
The first step to ordering a pair of custom jeans is to take measurements. The exact measurements you take will depend on the pair of jeans you order. Most styles though require the measurements from your waist, thigh and inseam. To make this process easy, and to ensure correct measurements are taken, use a fabric measuring tape that is flexible and will mold to your body. The website gives the exact details of how to take measurements for each style of jeans available.
Choose a Pocket Style
These jeans are truly customizable and allow you to have one of a kind jeans. This means you can choose everything, including pocket styles for the front and back of your jeans. Whether you want buttoned pockets, zippers or even just a regular pocket, the choice is yours. This is certainly a great way to add embellishment to your pants, but be careful of bulky pockets. A bulky pocket can add unnecessary padding to a curvy tush.
Embellish Your Jeans with Embroidery, Rivets and Thread
If you're tired of boring jeans, making a custom pair of jeans is certainly worth the money. It doesn't matter if you want your name embroidered across the seat of your pants or a medieval design, there are patterns to suit almost any taste, which means you can have a one of a kind pair of jeans. If embroidery isn't enough for you, you can also choose the color of thread your jeans are sewn together with. If you want to match the thread to the jeans or even want bright green thread, it isn't a problem. Want more options? Then why not choose antique copper stud rivets or steel dragon buttons? If these aren't enough options, you can also customize your zippers, add rips or even tummy control. Think of all the greatest features you've ever seen on jeans and the ability to add them to one pair of jeans. That's what a customized pair of jeans will allow you to do. You can even choose the wash color.
Be Prepared for Sticker Shock
It's important to note that you will pay a pretty penny custom jeans. Custom jeans start at $49 per pair, which is right on target with the price of jeans in a clothing store, but the more embellishments you add, the more you'll pay. Different rivets and buttons add $2, embroidery can add another $10, different colored thread will add enough $2 and different pocket styles can add up to another $7. As you can see, a pair of custom jeans come with a custom price. But, if you're just looking for a basic pair of jeans that fit better, you simply cannot beat custom jeans. These jeans are made to fit your body and that's not something you're going to find in your local clothing store.

The Top Mobile Gadgets of 2011 So Far

The evolution of mobile devices has accelerated out of the gate in 2011. From 3D displays to dual-core powerhouses, we're carrying some serious technology in our pockets. What devices are driving the trends of our mobile future in 2011?

Here are five of the most significant mobile products of the year to date.

1. HTC Evo 3D
HTC3DCool.jpg
The arrival of the HTC Evo 3D was a surprise to the mobile market, a step forward in technology that few anticipated. Like the Nintendo 3DS, the HTC Evo 3D features a 3D display that shows real 3D visuals without the use of special glasses. Not only does the Evo 3D display three-dimensional images, it captures 3D images and video with the attached dual-lens camera. Who knew 3D technology would fit in your pocket so quickly.

2. Apple iPad 2

The second iteration of the iPad remains the king of the tablet world, despite new competition from a range of products. The Apple iPad 2 added a second processor, a front-facing camera, a slimmer design and a smart cover to an already amazing offering. Oh, and much like the latest iPhone offering, the iPad 2 is available in sleek, pearly white.

3. Motorola Atrix 4G

According to Motorola, the new Motorola Atrix 4G is the world's most powerful smartphone. They didn't skimp on the specs, as this Android device is as advanced as you can get in a handset. It features a dual-core processor, up to 48GB of storage, a qHD display, fingerprint recognition security and a front-facing camera for video calling. The dual core processor is the Atrix 4G's greatest strength as it is one of the first mobile devices to offer such a processing punch.

4. Blackberry Playbook

In 2011, there have been a whole lot of tablets released not named "iPad". The Blackberry Playbook is the king of that pack, outselling even the new Motorola Xoom with 250,000 units sold in its first month. The Playbook features a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 7-inch display capable of 1080p HD playback and a pair of cameras on the front and back. Upon its reveal, the Playbook was the most powerful tablet available, and its custom Blackberry OS offered a new feel to the tablet experience and a genuine competitor to keep Apple in check.

5. iPhone 4

And then there was good old faithful. The iPhone 4, like its prior iterations, is one of the top-selling handsets of all time. Little has changed about the iPhone 4 in 2011, save for the white option released earlier this year. 2011 is likely to see one or two updates to the iPhone, the rumored iPhone 4S or even the edge-to-edge screen of the iPhone 5. The 4s model is rumored to ship with a dual-core A5 chipset and boosted specs across the board, plus availability on T-Mobile and Sprint networks. These fingers are tightly cross'd on that one!

Even with five months left in the year, it's hard to argue that this list will change much come December. Which of these magnificent mobile devices will you be adding to your stable in 2011? Share yours in the comments!

What's the Difference Between 3G and 4G?

If you've ever researched a smartphone purchase, the terms 3G and 4G have probably shown up on your radar at some point. Both refer to a connection method for mobile devices and a "generation" of mobile technology.

The first generation of mobile phone technology (1G) refers to the initial analog signal that was the backbone of mobile connectivity. The transition to second generation (2G) was characterized by the shift from analog signal to digital. The last popular phone to make use of 2G technology was the original iPhone in 2007, although 3G technology was already widely available.

Introduced in 2001 and brought to consumer use in 2003, third generation (3G) mobile technology became the successor to 2G and ushered in the era of the smartphone. 3G capability was originally made available to the market through devices geared towards business users, such as BlackBerry and Palm mobile phone products. We currently stand on the bridge between 3G and 4G, and we'll discuss why you may want to hold off on that 4G upgrade for a little while longer.

MiFi Device

3G: Today's standard3G represents a period in the timeline of mobile phone technology. Most mobile phones today run on some type of 3G network (depending on carrier) for their voice and data access. This access makes possible advanced phone functionality such as smartphone features of email, media streaming and downloading, and web browsing.

Theoretically, 3G speeds can reach up to 3 Megabits per second (Mbps), with average speeds tending to be closer to 1Mbps or lower. This means 1 million bits, or 125,000 bytes, of data are being transferred per second in equivalent speeds to most standard home DSL internet connections. At this download speed, it takes roughly 1 to 2 minutes to download a 4-minute MP3 file. 3G coverage spans most of the continental United States, with heavier coverage around major metropolitan areas.

Samsung Epic 4G

4G: The speed of what's just aheadMost technologies branded as 4G aren't quite 4G systems, but a late form of the 3G technology more commonly called "Pre-4G." 4G development focuses around achieving ultra-broadband speeds, competing with and in some cases outstripping the speeds provided by your home internet connection.

These goals make 4G ideal for the mobile consumer who is seeking to replace a wifi network with speed-equivalent or faster mobile technology through smartphone tethering or mobile broadband devices. 4G average speeds are targeted to be in the 100Mbps to 1Gbps range, roughly 10 to 100 times (dependent on location) faster than 3G networks. At that rate, that 4-minute MP3 download would take you mere seconds.

The current iterations that attempt to reach 4G standards are referred to as Pre-4G because they do not yet reach these data rates. Even Sprint, the company with the apparent leg up in the 4G race, doesn't yet offer true 4G on its 4G devices. Sprint's service technically falls into the pre-4G category, along with Verizon's newly launched 4G network.

There is only one U.S. carrier that is offering true 4G service: Sprint. Sprint currently has two mobile phones, the HTC Evo and the Samsung Epic, which have been benchmarked to achieve speeds 10 times faster than 3G; coverage is still limited to major metropolitan cities. Outside of these areas, data speeds revert to 3G.

Top 5 Qualities of a Good Entrepreneur

Top 5 Qualities of a Good Entrepreneur

To be an entrepreneur is all about moving outside the comfort zone and then satisfying that urge of starting something new.

This is what people like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Azim Premji did. But to carve a niche for yourself, you need to have those qualities which differentiate you from a normal career-man.
Let's take a look at them

Be Aware (and prepared) for the Risks Involved

A good number of people prefer not be an entrepreneur either because they prefer the comfort of a supervisor telling them what to do or because the fear the consequences if their venture goes wrong. Well, let's be honest, there are risks involved in being an entrepreneur. If you plan to step into this territory then you must be prepared for them.

Top 5 Qualities of a Good Entrepreneur

Put on your “Creativity” Hat

While most people would do things in the same run-of-the-mill way, as an entrepreneur you need to think a bit differently and do things the smart way. An idea can actually change your life (and many other lives). Never ignore an idea. If you come across hundred different ideas, chances are that only 5 out of them would be worthwhile. But without those hundred less effective ideas, you won't find the five great ideas.
Also, try and think differently. For example, you see people are tired of eating fruits and vegetables to meet their nutritional needs, set up a plant which manufactures multi-vitamin tablets. Don't know how to meet single women? Try online dating.

Discipline

As an entrepreneur, you'll stumble upon many opportunities. Not only you need to grab them, you should also treat them with discipline and thus do complete justice to them. Mark Zuckerberg didn't build Facebook over a cup of coffee. Like him, you too have to be persistent in your efforts and not let the zeal diminish. A flimsy approach towards thing is quite likely to lead you nowhere.

Top 5 Qualities of a Good Entrepreneur

Hard Work

Remember, there are no short cuts to success and no alternatives to hard work. Entrepreneurs should be doers and go-getters. If you are one of those who laze around a lot, then entrepreneurship is not for you. If you've picked up entrepreneurship, then you definitely need to choose between it and your bad habit of being slothful.

Having that “Vision”

It's something very critical for an entrepreneur. He should have the insight and determination to march forward and at the same time have an idea about his destination. He should not only be able to motivate himself, he also needs to be a guiding light for the people involved in his project. (MensXP.com)

Live right, stop cancers

It Is a matter of concern to see a steady rise in cancers among women in recent years. It is unfortunate that women in their 30s, who do not have any family history, are suffering from cancers unlike in the old days when cancer was considered an age-related ailment. Clearly, urban living is taking its toll.

Simple preventive actions can reduce some of these risk factors.

Environment

Pollution is known to be one of the contributors for cancer, for example, pesticides in farming.
Stay safe: Choose a relatively clean area to live in. Limit exposure to pollution by using non-polluting modes of transport like the underground. Find out the source of your produce, poultry and fish. Organic food is a good option.
Diet
A fat-rich diet can be a contributor to cancer. The younger generation swaps green leafy vegetables, dietary fibre and whole foods for fast, packaged, heat-and-eat food which contain additivies and preservatives (carcinogens).
Stay safe: Eat home-cooked food with plenty of fibre (35 g/day) and whole foods. Green leafy vegetables, pulses and oats are a good source of fibre. Avoid refined sugar, flour, white bread, pasta, fries and other fatty foods.

Lifestyle
Tobacco is a major contributor to head and neck cancers. It can affect other organs as well. Smoking is a major cause of cancers. Passive smoking is known to expose women to non-small cell lung cancers. Avoiding breastfeeding is counter-productive as is the use of unhygienic sanitary napkins (exposure to infection and cervical cancers). Certain oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) can make patients vulnerable to cancer (although recent studies have actually proved the opposite). Delayed age of conception and obesity are also considered risk factors.
Stay safe: Stop smoking, plan your family early and make it a point to breastfeed your baby. Consult your gynaecologist before considering OCP and HRT. Make sure you exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

My top tip
Move to clean, organic food; adopt a healthy lifestyle and schedule an annual check-up especially if you are above 40. You pay more upfront, but the costs are lower in the long term.

Huge rare earth deposits found in Pacific: Japan

A bastnaesite mineral containing rare earth is pictured in Tokyo

TOKYO (Reuters) - Vast deposits of rare earth minerals, crucial in making high-tech electronics products, have been found on the floor of the Pacific Ocean and can be readily extracted, Japanese scientists said on Monday.
"The deposits have a heavy concentration of rare earths. Just one square kilometer (0.4 square mile) of deposits will be able to provide one-fifth of the current global annual consumption," said Yasuhiro Kato, an associate professor of earth science at the University of Tokyo.
The discovery was made by a team led by Kato and including researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.
They found the minerals in sea mud extracted from depths of 3,500 to 6,000 meters (11,500-20,000 ft) below the ocean surface at 78 locations. One-third of the sites yielded rich contents of rare earths and the metal yttrium, Kato said in a telephone interview.
The deposits are in international waters in an area stretching east and west of Hawaii, as well as east of Tahiti in French Polynesia, he said.
He estimated rare earths contained in the deposits amounted to 80 to 100 billion tonnes, compared to global reserves currently confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey of just 110 million tonnes that have been found mainly in China, Russia and other former Soviet countries, and the United States.
Details of the discovery were published on Monday in the online version of British journal Nature Geoscience.
The level of uranium and thorium -- radioactive ingredients that are usually contained in such deposits that can pose environmental hazards -- was found to be one-fifth of those in deposits on land, Kato said.
A chronic shortage of rare earths, vital for making a range of high-technology electronics, magnets and batteries, has encouraged mining projects for them in recent years.
China, which accounts for 97 percent of global rare earth supplies, has been tightening trade in the strategic metals, sparking an explosion in prices.
Japan, which accounts for a third of global demand, has been stung badly, and has been looking to diversify its supply sources, particularly of heavy rare earths such as dysprosium used in magnets.
Kato said the sea mud was especially rich in heavier rare earths such as gadolinium, lutetium, terbium and dysprosium.
"These are used to manufacture flat-screen TVs, LED (light-emitting diode) valves, and hybrid cars," he said.
Extracting the deposits requires pumping up material from the ocean floor. "Sea mud can be brought up to ships and we can extract rare earths right there using simple acid leaching," he said.
"Using diluted acid, the process is fast, and within a few hours we can extract 80-90 percent of rare earths from the mud."
The team found that sites close to Hawaii and Tahiti were especially rich in rare earths, he said.
He gave no estimate of when extraction of the materials from the seabed might start.

London, July 18 (IANS) A flying car which usually finds its mention in children books or animated cartoon movies, may soon become a reality in Britain.

Aviation experts are saying a flying car could be in regular use in Britain within five years after a model was formally approved by US authorities, Daily Mail reported Monday.
The $250,000 Terrafugia Transition is a two-seater aircraft, which has a top speed of 115 mph, a range of 500 miles on a tank of fuel and requires just 20 hours training to fly.
The car, at the touch of a button, takes just 15 seconds for its wings to fold up automatically and the power to be re-routed from the propeller to the rear wheels.
It can then be driven at up to 65 mph and will comfortably fit in a standard size garage.
'It's like a little Transformer,' said Terrafugia founder Carl Dietrich, referring to the children's toys that were turned into a blockbuster movie franchise.
Although aimed primarily at buyers in the US where there are plenty of airstrips and 600 'fly-in' communities - Boeing 707 owner John Travolta being the best-known fan - more than 20 Britons have already declared an interest in the carbon-fibre vehicle.

The dealmaker

Having transformed a village in Uttar Pradesh so much so that it's now called Snapdeal.com Nagar, the e-commerce specialist, Kunal Bahl tells us how its done.

The start up
There weren't many career options I explored beyond academics growing up. I went to school at Delhi Public School RK Puram, New Delhi. We grew up in a middle class family and there was no concept of pocket money. But, if we wanted something, it was usually not refused, as long as the request was reasonable.
There was a significant focus on academics in our household from the beginning, and this discipline probably ensured that both my brother and I ended up doing reasonably well at studies. He went on to go to IIT-Delhi and then IIMCalcutta. I went to Wharton, which is honestly, something I regret in hindsight. But, it's never too late.
Nerves of steel
Entrepreneurship at a young age, especially if you have a good academic background, is a fairly irrational decision, because the short team economic opportunity costs as a result of becoming an entrepreneur would never make sense otherwise.
We faced every kind of challenge-funds, hiring good people, finding the right business model, dealing with daily problems, convincing potential partners that wisdom doesn't only come with age and 24 year olds can be good at something too. For both, me and my friend and co-founder, Rohit Bansal, giving up was never an option. After a certain point, we didn't know of a life outside building our company.
It was challenging, and continues to be. Rohit and my biggest contribution to our business is the team we built. Many respected people in the industry often tell us that Snapdeal has the best team in the Internet industry in India, and that's of course just not Rohit and I - it's our entire team of rockstar professionals.
Lose some, get some
Sacrifices are part of life and definitely a part of building a business. Both Rohit and I try our best to take time off to go on a vacation once or twice a year, or a Sunday off and play video games. We still go out for frequent dinners after work, which has been a ritual since the early days of the business. I would go as far as to say that our friendship when we first met in class 11th over a decade ago was based on our mutual love for food.
To be honest, professional life does take over most things, but as long as you are having fun, it doesn't really matter. One should spend time doing what they love and lead a regretless life. And for us that special thing is our company.
The good samaritan
We always wanted to build a socially responsible company, and recently we came across a situation where we found out about a village in Uttar Pradesh. The village has approximately 2,000 residents (about 650 families) and didn't even have access to basic necessities like water. We realised that we could solve this problem very easily. By investing a reasonably small amount of Rs 2 to Rs 3 lakh, we installed 15 hand pumps so that instead of walking 1 km everyday, the villagers now have easy access to clean water within 50-100m of their homes.
I spent a couple of days in the village, interacting with the villagers, and trying to understand how we can further help them, and how this initiative of ours, changed their lives. The community wanted to extend its gratitude through the gesture of renaming their village after our company to Snapdeal.com Nagar. One of our colleague's family hails from a place very close to Shiv Nagar and that is how the problems of the community were brought to our attention.
Food, movies and books
I love food and right now, I am experimenting with some innovative food related concepts, which may eventually be commercialised, but that is not the intent with which I am pursuing them. So, there is a lot of experimentation that is happening in my kitchen. In addition to food, I like reading and travelling, but my undying love is movies. Hopefully, one day I can write a book, which I can make a movie about. Now that would be something.

Job Hunting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Job Hunting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

There are several common mistakes that all job hunters make.

It's good to know them, so you can avoid them the next time you decide to quit and find a better job.

A Flawless Resume

No mistakes in spelling, grammar and your details. Then, after researching through the job position, modify your resume (experience and skills) to match the job advertised for.

Look Professional

Apart from not 'looking' the professional part, there are several things you can do wrong to effect a bad impression of you on your interviewers.
These include arriving late, not knowing enough about the company, the position you are applying for, behaving arrogantly (instead of confidently) and having a closed body language (no eye contact, arms crossed)

Losing your Cool

By getting tense, you might forget your answers and fumble through the interview Which is why you you should research the company extensively, as well as the position applied for weeks before applying. This will keep you calm, and having absorbed this information, allow you to use your own common sense in the interview.
Further, if you don't know the answer to a question, mumbling about wont get you anywhere - it's safer to admit that you don't know. You can add that you can research about it.

Referrals

An internal referral (i.e. from one of the company employees) will boost your chances of landing the job.

If you don't know anyone at the company, network from the alumni of you college, school, social networks, and professional
associations.

Not Applying Properly

Don't write a casual email job application. A formal, well written is essential, and represents your capabilities and skills.
Don't meander around with "I'de like to bring to your attention…" - get to the pint.

Showcase Your Skills

You are offering them the advantage of hiring you over the many applicants being interviewed for the job. To do this, you need to know your strengths and weaknesses.
Know your skill set - don't add false details to it. you should be able to tell your interviewer your capabilities and expertise in different situations.

Job Hunting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Practice

Give yourself time for the interview, and use this margin to prepare. Your wardrobe, your grooming, skill set and last minute checks can make the difference in a major interview. (MensXP.com)

Management Tip of the Day: How to think like a designer

BOSTON (Reuters Life!) - Really good designers somehow think differently from the rest of us about new products, and have the ability to transform insight into inspiration, says Harvard Business Review.
The Management Tip of the Day offers quick, practical management tips and ideas from Harvard Business Review and HBR.org (http:\\www.hbr.org). Any opinions expressed are not endorsed by Reuters.
"Good designers see the world differently. Their unique views enable them to come up with new products and innovations that leave the rest of us envious.
Here are three ways you can approach innovation like a designer:
1. Think about people, not customers. No one asked for the iPod or texting in a customer survey. Move beyond asking what customers want to thinking about what they need, or don't know they need.
2. Observe. Get out in the world and watch what people do. Don't rely on what they say about their behavior - see it first hand.
3. Look at what might change. You can't be too focused on today. Think instead about what the future might bring."
-Today's management tip was adapted from "How Good Designers Think" by Simon Rucker.

Top fitness benefits you may be unaware of

Slimmer thighs, firmer muscles, more energy and a healthier heart are all pay-offs you’d expect from getting fitter – but here are seven benefits of improved fitness that you may not have thought of...

Better hearing through exercise

A study at Miami University found that cardiovascular training improves your hearing in the short term and helps to preserve it in the long term. Other studies have found that the least fit people tend to have the worst hearing – and that’s even taking into account the number of exercisers blasting their ears with iPods...

More creativity from working out

Brand new research from Rhode Island College suggests that aerobic exercise can kick-start your creativity – and keep your brain cells tingling for a couple of hours afterwards. Activities that are ‘no-brainers’ and don’t require you to put in too much thought are best – so pick running or swimming over rock climbing or doubles tennis. Also, don’t go too hard, as the best creativity boost comes from exercising at a comfortable pace.

Higher libido from exercise

Yes, being fit helps to improve your sex life! A study that looked at 8,000 women aged 18 to 49 found that in women who exercise three times a week, 40% report greater arousal, 31% have sex more often and 25% find orgasm easier to achieve. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health involving 31,000 men found that men who are physically active have a 30% lower risk of erectile dysfunction than men who do little or no physical activity.

Better quitting power through exercise

If you are trying to kick your smoking habit, research suggests that exercise might help. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed 281 sedentary female smokers, who were otherwise healthy, in their efforts to quit. The study found that smokers who take part assigned exercise sessions are twice as likely to quit and stay cigarette free compared to those who don’t do any exercise.

Deeper sleep after exercise

Being active during the day can help you get more sleep in at night. According to the US National Sleep Foundation, daytime physical activity can help you to fall asleep more quickly and get better quality sleep. Regular exercise can also help sufferers of insomnia to beat their problem. And, contrary to popular belief, recent research from the University of California suggests that even late evening workouts won’t hamper your ability to get to sleep.

More regularity from exercise

Yes, we’re talking about how regularly you go to the bathroom here! An Australian study found that regular exercisers are less likely to suffer from constipation than sedentary people. The boost to your circulation – as well as the actual physical effects of movement – are thought to be the reason for this. There is even a link between high levels of fitness and low levels of bowel cancer – though this may be because fit people are more likely to eat healthily, too.

Better focus through exercising

The very fact that exercise requires planning, application, dedication and discipline means that every time you get your kit on, you are working on your character development, too. For example, a study of people training for a marathon in New York found that regular exercise improves people’s goal-setting, organization and discipline – both at work and in other areas of life.

Bajaj-KTM co-developed Duke 200c motorcycle to be launched next year

Bajaj KTM Duke 125cc Bike

The motorcycle enthusiasts who have been waiting and speculating over the biking forums about the spy shots of Duke 200cc with KTM brand on it have to wait for some more time as the Austrian sports bike maker KTM has stated that they will launch the motorcycle, jointly developed with Bajaj Auto, in India at the Auto Expo to be held in the capital early next year.
The Austrian popular off-road maker in which Bajaj Auto holds nearly a 40 per cent stake, has already launched its first co-developed bike in Europe in March this year. The reports quoted Cross Industries AG CEO and also the CEO of KTM Sportmotorcycle AG , Stefan Pierer as saying "During the Delhi Auto Expo next year, we will be launching the first 200-cc Duke bike in India." The bike will be produced at the Pune facility of Bajaj Auto, he added.
It was also mentioned that when asked about the company's sales target in India, Pierer said: "We expect to sell 25,000 to 30,000 units in India in the first year of launch. After one year, we will launch the 350-cc Duke in India." KTM had launched the 125-cc 'Duke', developed jointly with Bajaj Auto, in Europe in March this year. "We have already sold nearly 7,000 units in Europe. We are targeting to sell about 10,000 units in Europe this year," he said, it was mentioned.
The partnership between the two companies has raised the hopes of motorcycle enthusiasts in the country of having a proper tech-laden motorcycle including some of the feisty off-roaders. "All the bikes that we produce in India will be global models. Now we are looking to export KTM bikes from Bajaj facility to other emerging markets like Thailand, Malaysia, and Brazil," Pierer said.
According to reports, overall, KTM aims to sell 82,000 units this year, up from 62,000 units in 2010, he said, adding that by 2015, it was targeting the sale of 2 lakh units. In 2007, Bajaj picked up a 14.9 per cent stake in KTM for around Rs 300 crore. A year later, it increased its stake in the European bike-maker to 25 per cent and has been increasing it gradually. It was also mentioned that both companies also signed an agreement for jointly developing 125-cc bikes, which will be built at Bajaj's Chakan plant near Pune for exports to the European market under the KTM brand. They had earlier planned to launch their bikes in India in the latter half of this year.
The report mentioned when asked if Cross Industries, the holding company of KTM, would allow its partner, Bajaj, to hike its stake, Pierer said: "Bajaj currently holds about a 40 per cent stake and we have an arrangement with them under which they can go up to acquiring 49 per cent stake in KTM. They can acquire the stake only through open market and we are helping them to gain more stake in KTM." He, however, said: "We will not dilute the promoters' holding of 51 per cent in KTM."

Death after blast quiz

Mumbai, July 17: The brother of a prime accused in a serial bombing case died in a hospital hours after Mumbai police had picked him up for interrogation on Wednesday's explosions.
The relatives of Faiz Usmani, a 42-year-old grocer, alleged he was tortured but the police denied the charge and ordered a CID inquiry.
The provisional post-mortem report said the body had no external injuries. "The report has revealed that there are no external injuries. The death was caused by brain haemorrhage and heart infarction. The viscera have been preserved," said Dr T.P. Lahane, the dean of JJ Hospital, where the post-mortem was carried out.
Others said it would have to be a coincidence for brain haemorrhage and myocardial infarction (or heart attack) to happen naturally at the same time. Intense emotional or physical stress may trigger a heart attack in a heart patient. Similar conditions can cause bleeding in the brain.
The relatives said Faiz was in good health when he was picked up but the police said he was a hypertension patient.
The death has come at a time the police appeared to be running into dead ends in the triple blast probe. Veteran officers said that "in such frustrating circumstances", third-degree methods were not uncommon.
Faiz died at Sion hospital in central Mumbai around 1.30am, 10 hours after he was picked up from his residence by crime branch officials for questioning on the July 13 bombings at Dadar, Zaveri Bazaar and Opera House that killed 19 persons.
Faiz was the elder brother of Afzal Usmani, the prime accused in the 2008 serial bombings in Ahmedabad that killed 56 people. Afzal, now lodged in a Gujarat jail, allegedly belonged to an Indian Mujahideen module busted by the Mumbai crime branch, then headed by current anti-terrorism squad chief Rakesh Maria.
Faiz owned a grocery store in the densely populated minority pocket of Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, in northeastern Mumbai, and lived on the first floor of the shop with his wife and six children. A day before last week's blasts, two alleged aides of Afzal were arrested not too far from the shop.
"When I returned home from college, my mother told me that my father had been summoned to the crime branch. When I saw my father later in the evening at Sion hospital, he was vomiting badly. He was hale and hearty when he left home for the police questioning. We believe that he was tortured by police in custody," Faiz's son Aseem told reporters.
Amjad Sayyed, a neighbour and family friend, told The Telegraph: "Officials of crime branch unit 6 came to Faiz's shop around 3.30pm on Saturday and took him away for questioning. Around 5.30pm, the family received a call saying he was extremely unwell and was vomiting. The police admitted him to Sion hospital. By the time we reached the hospital, he was in a serious condition."
Denying the torture charge, the police said Faiz was a hypertension patient and had reported sick 20 minutes into questioning. "He had not taken his regular medicine for hypertension for the last two to three days. As soon as he reported sick, we rushed him to Sion hospital," an officer said.
A doctor said that when Faiz was brought to the hospital, his blood pressure was higher than 220 points.

India wants access to Google, Skype data

New Delhi: Amid a raging controversy over BlackBerry posing security concerns, security agencies have now asked the Telecom Ministry to provide real-time monitoring of various social networking sites like Google, Skype and Twitter, among others.

"There are a whole list of companies that have been asked to give (access), provide monitoring solution, because law enforcement agencies, the home ministry and intelligence agencies want that information for national security," Ministry of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot told reporters on the sidelines of an AMD-Assocham event here.

The government had earlier asked Canadian firm Research in Motion, which provides BlackBerry services, to handover an interception solution for its BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS), BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) over security concerns that terrorists may use these services, since the data is highly encrypted and security agencies can't monitor such services.

The government had also sent similar notices to companies like Google and Skype to allow interception of the data.

"Papers were exchanged months ago... The discussions are on and we are looking at finding a solution soon, since it is a matter of national security," he said.

Skype, which was earlier this year bought by Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), provides telephony services over the Internet, while Google offers a host of services like search and e-mail.

Speaking at an international conference on 'Ethics, Governance and Technology', organised jointly by IT giant AMD and industry chamber ASSOCHAM, AMD (India) Managing Director Ravi Swaminathan said, "We believe that forums like these create a platform for the industry to come together and address relevant societal issues."

"Technology has given rise to the awareness and aspirations of many and at the same time is playing the role of an enabler for governance and regulating ethical issues," he added.

Computing has moved beyond increasing clock speeds to enhancing experiences and has become a catalyst for improving efficiencies, timeliness and responsiveness in service delivery. As a representative of the technology industry at this event, AMD reiterates its commitment to remain at the heart of simplifying technology, deploying innovation to make technology affordable and inclusive, he said.

BlackBerry has been maintaining that the company did not possess any key and once the data is transferred on its server, the same cannot be intercepted by the company even.

The government is understood to have given the company another deadline till August 15 to provide the interception keys to the security agencies to avoid banning of its services in the country.

How to Create and Keep Effective Schedules

alt

The ability of creating (and then sticking to) effective schedules is becoming a rare art these days.
An effective schedule makes you dependable, accountable and more productive and also makes realise the important of respecting time.
In order to craft a meticulous schedule and then sticking to it, keeps these important tips in mind:

Well-defined Objectives

alt

The best thing to do is to weigh your objectives prudently for events such as meetings BEFOREHAND. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish through a particular meeting. This way you can take out the required duration of time from your busy schedule and allot time properly to other events of the day.

Sort out the Tardiness Issues

Realise the importance of punctuality. Being on time will impart you a unique reputation which would always stay with you and keep you ahead of others. This way, you will be able to manage your (and others' as well) schedule well and also learn to respect time.

Send Confirmations

If you have a number of meetings and appointments lined-up for the day, you must manage them carefully or there are chances that they might go awry. This will only hamper overall efficiency. An easy way out is to send confirmations for the meetings you are going to attend and reminders for the ones which you have called for. You can also set reminders on your phone/PC/iPad etc for the appoitments/meetings planned for the day.

Consider Time Lost in Between Planned Activities

On paper, in an MS Excel sheet or on any other form of tracker, a time-table may look nice and motivational but the reality is a bit different. You may need to account for traffic jams, sicknesses, bumping into a friend, a sudden meeting or anything which crops up from nowhere. You may not add these things to your schedule/time-table but you must keep a mental account of them. Discuss this with your employer if required.

alt

Time Table, Tricks and Tips

Realise that you have a given number of hours in a day and you have to make the most of them. Meticulously draft a time-table (but don't spend too much time in that). Prioritize things in life and learn the art of saying “NO” to things which are nothing but distractions. Once a time-table is made, it is extremely important to stick to it or else the entire exercise of making one would be rendered useless. (MensXP.com)

What’s Next from Facebook: A Music Service called ‘Vibes?’

alt

After the amazing Skype-powered video chat service (though they’ve messed up the chat box), are the folks at Facebook planning to give yet another surprise to the millions of users?
References to a product called ‘Vibes’ have been discovered in Facebook’s code, and rumour has it that it is related to the company’s hitherto unannounced music service.
An independent software developer and researcher Jeff Rose has written about this mysterious music service on his blog. Rose was installing the setup necessary for enabling video chat when he stumbled upon a code indicating the launch of Facebook music service. The curious researcher decided to look into the code of the setup. He found that the installer supports two applications instead of one. One is called “peep” which is related to the video chat application and the other one is called “vibes” which is apparently associated to music service.
Take a look at the code below:

alt
“I searched around to see what this is all about, and it seems that this is an unannounced feature that has yet to be released,” UK newspaper ‘The Telegraph’ quoted Rose as having written on his blog. “The vibes app connects with a music download dialog in the page though, so I’m guessing that with this release we are seeing the seeds for Facebook’s upcoming music offering.”

Rumours of Facebook launching some sort of music-related service were already doing the rounds. So does this lend some serious credibility to those rumours? Well, even if Facebook is planning to launch a music service, its type has still not been determined. Will it be an app for downloading music? Will we be able to buy tracks? Or will it be a cloud-based service? We can only speculate at the moment.
alt

Be that as it may, Mr Zuckerberg has already declared that this is just the start of the launching season in 2011. Looks like we have a lot of Facebook goodies waiting for us. Hey you guys at Google, are you listening? (MensXP.com)

Why do Americans die younger than Britons?

Blood pressure test

New life expectancy figures show Americans some way behind countries like Canada, the UK and Australia. Why?
Living in the world's richest country comes at a price, and it's measured in life years.

Graph

Men in the US are on average aged 75 when they die. That is 1.5 years younger than men in the UK and 3.5 years younger than men in Australia, says a new study.

American women live on average to just under 81 - about three years younger than the average Australian woman.

While life expectancy in the US continues to improve, says the report by researchers at University of Washington in Seattle and Imperial College, London, it is not increasing as quickly as in other Western countries, so the gap is widening.

"The researchers suggest that the relatively low life expectancies in the US cannot be explained by the size of the nation, racial diversity, or economics," says the document, which ranks the US 38th in the world for life expectancy overall.

"Instead, the authors point to high rates of obesity, tobacco use and other preventable risk factors for an early death as the leading drivers of the gap between the US and other nations."
"We weren't surprised that we had lower life expectancies than other countries, but we were surprised by the fact that we were falling further behind," says Dr Ali Mokdad, professor of global health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Take a country like Australia, he says. "It also has a nation of immigrants. It also is a relatively young country. It has similar socioeconomic characteristics.

"It has an obesity problem, and yet it has continued to improve in life expectancy and remains one of the healthiest nations in the world."

So how should the US address these risk factors?

Smoking alone is responsible for one out of every five deaths in the US, the professor says, yet the US has not been as tough as Australia in restricting tobacco advertising and public smoking.

Australia also has a greater focus on primary care - which helps with health education, and early treatment of any problems - and it has done a good job reducing the number of road traffic accidents, he adds.

The US could also save 100,000 lives a year by reducing salt in people's diets, since high blood pressure kills one in six people, Dr Mokdad says.
Then there's the big issue - about one in three adults is classified as obese. That's about 10 times as many as in long-living countries like Japan, according to OECD figures.

But the US is a big country, and while parts of Mississippi have a male life expectancy of 67, behind nations like the Philippines, women in areas of Florida live as long, on average, as the Japanese, who top the longevity rankings.

It is precisely this kind of inequality that goes some way to explain why the US - and the UK to a lesser degree - lag behind other countries, according to Danny Dorling, a professor of human geography at the University of Sheffield in the UK.

He believes a more even distribution of wealth, even if the average were lower, could mean longer lives for everyone.

"I think stress is a part of it - this is the key thesis of Michael Marmot and his book on the status syndrome. People get worn out faster with greater inequality.

"However there is much more. If you have most health spending just going on a few people who have the best health to begin with - [as in] the US system - that is hardly efficient.

"In a more unequal rich country more doctors are working on things like plastic surgery. More dentists whiten teeth than fix bad teeth and so on."
Infant deaths

While it is not surprising that poor Americans lose out from inequality, Prof Dorling argues that the rich may suffer too.

Yukichi Chuganji, former world's oldest man Several of the world's oldest people have been from Japan

"Top income groups are badly affected because their doctors are not necessarily mainly interested in their health but work for organisations that have to make an income," he says.

"I am not suggesting it is deliberate but you make more money out of a patient who spends more on many drugs and investigatory operations than one who lives longer with less intervention.

"In a more equal system the rich who are well get less intervention - and they live longer in the UK than the US."

Growing income inequality in the UK, since the 1970s, has has helped to push it down the European life expectancy rankings, says Mr Dorling.

However, life expectancy is not just about forecasts made for newborn babies.

When you look at life expectancy at 65 or 75, the US performs rather well, says Svetlana Ukraintseva, senior investigator at the Center for Population Health and Aging (CPHA) at Duke University in North Carolina.

Elderly Americans have a higher chance of surviving heart disease and many cancers than their counterparts in other rich countries, she says. Where the US lags behind is what happens at a much younger age.

"It's likely not the quality of medical care itself that is the problem but access to it. Medical insurance for all might help."

This is one goal of the healthcare reform signed into law in March 2010, which will oblige American adults to have health insurance when it comes into force in 2014.

However, this remains a controversial idea in the US and the legislation could yet come unstuck.

Challenges to the constitutionality of the law are working their way through the courts, and fierce opponents in the Republican Party make no secret of their desire to repeal the legislation if the opportunity arises.

UK unemployment level falls again

UK unemployment fell 26,000 in the three months to May to 2.45 million, official figures show.
Job Centre sign

The unemployment rate was 7.7%, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), down from 7.8% in the previous quarter.
However, the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in June rose by 24,500 to 1.52 million - the biggest such increase in two years.
It follows an upwardly-revised 22,500 rise in the claimant count for May.
Benefit changes The total number claiming unemployment benefits reached its highest level since March 2010, while the claimant count rate held steady at 4.7%.
It is the second month that the claimant count has risen while the unemployment total - which is based on a separate survey - has fallen.
The ONS said part of the discrepancy between the two measures was due to an increase in the number of women claiming Jobseeker's Allowance due to changes in the benefits system.
"It's still difficult to assess where the labour market is overall," said Victoria Cadman, economist at Investec, adding that the employment figures were reassuring.
The total number in employment rose 50,000 versus the previous quarter to 29.28 million - the highest total in more than two years.
The number of long-term unemployed fell by 37,000, partly offset by an 11,000 increase in the number of people out of work for less than a year.
Joblessness amongst 16 to 24-year-olds fell by 42,000.
The employment report also indicated that the number of new jobs in the private sector was outstripping government job losses.
The public sector workforce shed 24,000 during the three months to May, far less than the 104,000 new positions created by the private sector.
Average earnings, excluding bonuses, rose a faster-than-expected 2.1% in the three months to May, although this was still well short of the inflation rate.
On Tuesday, the ONS reported consumer prices inflation of 4.2% in June.

Kris Gopalakrishnan:
We have seen overall growth of 3.5% YOY, 12000 recruitments, good customer traction, reorganisation is behind us and onsite volume growth 6.8%. We're changing the way we do business with Europe. Our deal pipeline is strong.
Bala:
We recruited 9,900 people, the full impact of wage increase has come into play. We expect margins can decline by 2.5%, and the net impact's hardly 4% as a result of the currency fluctuations. We are keeping Y-O-Y revenue guidance at 18-20% which is better than before. For Q2, Infosys expects 5% revenue growth. Customers are cautious about spending but are not reducing budgets as the economic conditions are uncertain. So we are keeping the guidance same and we expect even growth across quarters.
Shibulal:
New strategic results will yield market-leading results in the medium term that is 3-5 years, but immediate results will show up in 2-3 quarters.
